Wilanów Palace (Pałac w Wilanowie)
The Royal Palace in Wilanow, this magnificent baroque residence of Jan III Sobieski, the Polish king known for his victorious battles against Ottoman Empire, survived World War II almost intact.
The king gave the task of drawing its new small country residence to the court architect Augustyn Locci. Soon, after series of military successes and increasing influence of the royal post, the project expanded. Between 1677 and 1696 the palace become a mixture of nobility house, Italian villa and a French palace in the style of Louis XIV. In XVIII century the King August II the Strong had made considerable changes, especially to the interior décor.
Today the rich interiors and the gallery of portraits of the Palace can be seen only during guided tours between 9.30 and 4.30 p.m., on Sundays between 9.30 and 6 p.m.
The 45 hectares
Park around the Palace comprise gardens in a number of different styles: a terrace Baroque garden, a Neo-Renaissance rose garden, an English landscape park and an English-Chinese landscape park.
